Celebrating Achievement: Longford Sports Partnership and Longford Leader host annual awards
Longford Sports Partnership are calling for nominations
Press Release: Tuesday, 3 November 2026

Longford Sports Partnership, as part of Longford County Council, together with the Longford Leader, is proud to be associated with this year's prestigious Longford Sports Star Awards. Since the inception of these awards, athletes from a wide range of sports and achievements have been recognised. The 2026 awards continue that tradition, celebrating an impressive variety of sports and world-class accomplishments.
The role of Longford Sports Partnership is to increase participation in sports and physical activity for everyone—particularly older people, girls and women, people with disabilities, unemployed individuals and those living in disadvantaged communities. This is achieved by creating opportunities, strengthening resources, increasing awareness and working within the structures of sport. High-performing athletes play a vital role in this mission by inspiring others and raising the profile of sport across the county.
We call for nominations which will include athletes who have achieved remarkable success at local, national and international levels, alongside volunteers whose dedication ensures sport remains accessible to all. So, in addition to calling for nominations to the general categories, we called for nominations in the following categories: Exceptional Service to Sport/Hall of Fame, Volunteer of the Year, Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Sports Ability.
Cathaoirleach Cllr Gerry Hagan said, "These awards highlight the exceptional talent and commitment that exists across County Longford. Whether competing at the highest level, coaching young players or volunteering behind the scenes, each person recognised this year has made a meaningful contribution. Their achievements bring pride to their communities and set a positive example for future generations."
Chief Executive Samantha Healy added, "The Longford Sports Star Award winners represent the very best of what sport can achieve. Their success reflects hard work, determination and the support of families, clubs and volunteers. Longford County Council is proud to support initiatives that help people of all ages and abilities take part in sport and physical activity throughout the county."
Tony Headon, Longford Sports Partnership Chairperson said,"Sport has the power to bring people together, build confidence and create opportunities. We have no doubt that this year’s athletes and volunteers will have shown outstanding dedication in their chosen fields.”
Sarah Mulligan, Longford Sports Partnership Coordinator, said, " Longford Sports Partnership is encouraging people to take the time to nominate the achievements of our talented sportspeople throughout County Longford. These winners represent what the Sports Partnership is all about; what sport is about. Sport should be progressive and attract participants from every corner of the County, from every age group and from all social backgrounds. "
Nominations can be made to longfordsportsawards2026@gmail.com and the closing date is Thursday, November 12 at 10am.
